Frequently Asked Question FAQ

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique designed to encourage the natural movement of lymphatic fluid through the body.

Originally developed by Emil and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s, the technique uses gentle, precise and rhythmic movements that work with the superficial lymphatic system.

Unlike traditional massage, which primarily works with muscles and deeper soft tissues, MLD uses a lighter touch and specific sequences intended to support lymphatic flow.

The lymphatic system itself is an essential part of the body’s fluid balance and immune function. It helps collect excess fluid from tissues and transport it back towards the bloodstream.

Although lymphatic drainage has recently gained popularity in beauty and wellness, its foundations are rooted in decades of established practice.

Why Consider Lymphatic Drainage?

People seek lymphatic treatments for different reasons, from facial aesthetics and temporary puffiness to general body wellness and certain post-operative needs.

The iFLO Approach

At iFLO Wellness, we believe lymphatic care should be intentional, individualized and grounded in an understanding of the lymphatic system.

Our approach incorporates training in the Dr. Vodder method, an internationally recognized manual lymphatic drainage technique.

Each appointment begins with an understanding of your goals and relevant health considerations so we can determine whether the requested treatment is appropriate.

We distinguish between aesthetic lymphatic treatments and therapeutic medical care, ensuring that services remain within the practitioner’s training and scope of practice.

Is lymphatic drainage the same as regular massage?

No. Manual lymphatic drainage uses gentle, specific movements rather than the deeper pressure commonly associated with conventional massage.

Is lymphatic drainage painful?

MLD is generally gentle and should not be painful. If you experience discomfort during treatment, let your practitioner know.

Can lymphatic drainage help with facial puffiness?

Gentle facial lymphatic techniques may help reduce puffiness associated with fluid accumulation. Results vary depending on the underlying cause.

How often should I book lymphatic drainage?

Frequency depends on your goals, treatment type and individual circumstances. There is no single schedule that is appropriate for everyone.  One of our practitioners can provide recommendations.

Is lymphatic drainage suitable after cosmetic surgery?

It may be appropriate in selected circumstances, but treatment must follow the operating surgeon’s instructions and clearance. We do not recommend beginning treatment immediately after surgery without medical approval.

Are there situations where lymphatic drainage is unsuitable?

Yes. Certain conditions, including suspected blood clots, acute infections and some cardiac or other medical conditions, may make treatment inappropriate or require medical clearance. A health intake is completed before treatment.

Do you treat lymphoedema?

iFLO currently focuses on its advertised aesthetic and wellness treatments. Clients seeking comprehensive lymphoedema management should consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
